What is a MF in a water purifier?

Many people who have old water filters at home or were taught about what it means will answer the question, "what does MF mean in water purifier?" with this solution: "it means media filter". The term "media" typically refers to an object that is porous and can be used to separate different types of matter. One example of a media that separates solid or liquid particles would be an air filter, while another would be a piece of cloth with pores. Water filters often use typical and powerful technologies like sand, activated carbon or ceramic beads to remove the bad stuff from our drinking water. Some water filters also use media filters. So, what does MF in a water purifier really mean? Well, it is the acronym of the letter F and the number 3. And the meaning is this: media filter (MF) is a piece of filter media which contains activated carbon and silica gel granules to remove harmful chemicals from your water. What's activated carbon?

Activated carbon is a material that can be made from coconut shells, peat or coal. When activated carbon is oxidized with oxygen in air it gets very porous, allowing gaseous molecules to pass through to give us clean water with minimal after taste and odor flavorings.

What's silica gel?

Silica gel is a granular material made from silicate glass and salt. It is the main material used in MF in water purifier. The water or other liquids are placed between two layers of silica gel. The result is that the pressure in the inside layer (the one containing activated carbon) will cause the particles on top of it to be forced out of the water through holes in the bottom layer, leaving clean liquid behind. In a sense, it does as it promised, but does not yet give us any clean water to drink. What we do get is decanted from dirty water and what gets left after filtration must be cleaned first before drinking. What does MF mean in water purifier?

MF means media filter. Some water purifiers use just one medium filter, while others the combination of different media to remove water impurities. Although the industry is calling it MF and claiming that it's some kind of media filter, it really isn't. Media filters are usually sand and activated carbon. The combination of these two is used in cheap models to remove odor, bad taste etc. They also sell other combinations that sound very similar like ceramic or granular mf, ceramic and anion mf or ceramic and cationic mf filters. On the other hand media filters as they are widely known as have not been in the market for some time.

Water purifiers by their very nature need to have certain levels of purity. If you have an old or weak system it is absolutely necessary to change the filter and clean it regularly to avoid contamination due to mineral deposits, rust etc. The good news is that you can use any quality filters for your purifier and all results will be more than satisfactory.

It is important that a high-quality media filter can contain at least 0.3% active carbon content and should be able to withstand frequent cleaning if needed (every two months).
